S+P 500 surges to new record

In the corporate arena, shares of General Motors rose after the auto maker reported a 1 per cent increase in June auto sales, topping forecasts for a decline from researchers Kelley Blue Book and Edmunds. com.

The S&P 500 index added 11 points, or 0. 6 per cent, to 1,971, after hitting an intraday record high for the first time since Thursday.

At 2am (AEST), the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 123 points, or 0. 7 per cent, to 16,950, within reach of its June 20 record close of 16947. 08.

The Nasdaq Biotechnology Index added 2. 1 per cent, while the Nasdaq Internet Index and Russell 2000 index of small companies' shares added 1. 4 per cent and 0. 8 per cent, respectively.
