ACCC backs Woolworths' Hudson buy

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says it will not oppose the planned acquisition of Hudson Building Supplies by a joint venture between Woolworths and Lowe's, which operate Masters hardware stores.

The ACCC said there was some overlap between Hudson and Masters in supplying products to smaller trade customers, but said a number of rivals in local markets would competitively constrain the joint venture.

The competition watchdog said the proposed deal would not be likely to substantially lessen competition in any local market for the retail supply of building supplies, hardware and home improvement products.
