Australian shares rise on back of strong Wall St lead

The mining sector was making a significant contribution to the gains. Rio Tinto had risen 1. 4 per cent, while BHP Billiton was up 1. 2 per cent ahead of its results due out just after the Australian market closes late this afternoon. A 1. 7 per cent fall for the Commonwealth Bank was a major drag on the finance sector, although entirely due to the company trading without its latest dividend from today onwards.
