Beijing to expand ETS

According to the news service, public transport – including airports – data centres, banking and universities will be among the new sectors, with the companies to be given free permits in September to cover their expected emissions for the year, but if they exceed that level they must buy extra permits in the market.

The scheme, one of seven city or provincial carbon markets operating across the nation, already covers the power, heating and manufacturing sectors, Reuters says, with Beijing hoping it will help strengthen control over the capital's rapidly growing greenhouse gas emissions.
