Planned strike by Darwin teachers called off

Staff at Darwin High School have forced the Northern Territory branch of the Australian Education Union (AEUNT) to reverse a decision to strike next week.

The acting branch secretary of the AEUNT, Peter Hardcastle, has since withdrawn the notice for protected industrial action with the Fair Work Commission.

But the NT branch has faced internal dissent since previous president Matthew Cranitch used union funds to run as an independent candidate in the Blain by-election in March.

But the principal of Darwin High School, Trevor Read, has sent out a letter telling parents the AEU sub-branch had voted not to take part and classes would continue as scheduled.

The AEUNT had planned for all its members at public schools in Darwin and Palmerston to take part in industrial action on Wednesday afternoon.
