Wall Street stocks open stronger

Wall Street stocks have opened higher following a drop in US jobless claims and news of Bank of America's record settlement with US authorities over dodgy mortgages.

The Labor Department reported that US initial jobless claims fell to 298,000 in the week ending August 16, a bigger drop than expected and fresh evidence of tightening in the labour market.

The Justice Department announced a long-awaited $16. 65 billion settlement with Bank of America to settle accusations over dodgy mortgage securities it issued ahead of the 2008 financial crisis.
