Innovation and commercialisation lag in Australia

On the surface, Australia appears to be doing reasonably well, ranking 17th on the Global Innovation Index and 15th on the OECD research collaboration report.

“A small Australian company that took a research project through to now being a product being marketed in more than 12 countries around the world, I think that’s a great measure of success,” said Andrew Maxwell, the chief executive of technology firm Global Kinetics.

Australia is ranked 17th in the latest global survey on innovation, but the reality is the clever country is punching well below its weight.

“It seemed like a very strange thing to do, given that all of the other developed countries in the world are investing in innovation,” he said.
