The Johnson Redbook Sales Index also showed seasonally adjusted sales for the period improved 4. 3 per cent from a year earlier, compared with a target for an increase of 4. 5 per cent.
National chain-store sales rose 0. 7 per cent during August from July, according to Redbook Research's latest indicator, released on Wednesday.
For September, Redbook expects chain-store sales growth of 3. 8 per cent from a year earlier.
Redbook noted that last-minute back-to-school shopping and bargain hunting boosted sales in the latest week.
